The Beat Waste Startup Challenge

Transform Food 'Waste" into Magic Soil
30 24

mikerobe · May 28, 2010

Food waste can be source separated and composted, neighbor and environmentally friendly using technologies that we have developed over the past 15 years.

To create a sustainable environment we’ve got to move toward zero waste, reconnect the circle of life.

We propose to build and operate a state of the art food composting facility to accept 1,000 tons per day, to serve the lower Hudson Valley Region in New York. Composting will be done on a 150,000 square foot concrete pad, under roof, 3 miles of aeration veins built into the concrete pad.

Once the first facility is up and running, we expect to replicate it around the world.

Our Dynamic Bio-Filter technology has demonstrated its ability to eliminate foul odors very efficiently.

Google search for “compost research silos” often brings up our work as 7 of the top 8 search results; “composting + forced aeration” the top two search results. We know this will work because we’ve done our hands-on homework. The primary focus is to provide massive value to society and our environment, with the well earned profit being a byproduct.

More information can be found at www.magicsoil.com and www.magicsoil.com/success. There are five reference letters accessible at the websites.

Excellent proposal on a much-needed solution to some of our waste problems. Based on what I have learned, I have no doubt the full system will work as described!

“I’ve been following John’s work for at least 3 years, and I’ve seen his lab. I’ve seen how plants thrive in the MagicbioSoil. He’s applying solid engineering, science and business sense. We need this technology. He’s also a powerful team leader.”

This is the greatest idea I have ever seen. This is the solution on a big scale or a small scale. I run an organic farm and this man has the solution. GO! John Crocket, GO!

We at Compost Tahoe salute your efforts. We are both working on the same issue albeit on opposite ends of the country. I view our projects as complimentary even as we compete for the same funding. I can see the potential for a powerful, synergistic effect if there is a way that our efforts can be combined. With our 'growing' success in demonstrating to the commercial sector both the environmental and economic benefits of food waste diversion and our "if it'll grow here...it'll work anywhere" approach combined with your composting technology, we have the makings of a program that can have a national and even global impact on food waste diversion while fostering a healthy, local food movement. While we have a very experienced commercial composter near the South Shore communities of Lake Tahoe, it would further reduce VMT's and cost if we had regional composting facilities which is one of our goals for the North Shore communities of the Tahoe region. Again, thank you for your hard work and dedication to providing a solution to this signifcant waste issue. Tom Wendell for Compost Tahoe

Food waste and other compostable materials are upwards of 30% of the waste going to our landfills. There’s definitely a lack of well-run facilities that can compost food waste, so I hope you get your project off the ground. I know from experience that a very difficult part of the process is the siting of the facilities, so be sure not to discount the amount of education that’ll be needed for local politicians and the public in the area on the benefits and necessity of composting facilities and how yours will be better than what people might be thinking of (they often think they will be as bad as a landfill).

We need to get back to Nature, moving towards sustainability and health for ourselves and the Planet. John's composting project, and resulting MagicSoil, is a logical step in that direction. I have seen John's garden, and how the plants thrive in the soil he creates through composting. We need to see John's vision become a reality, so people in this area can recycle their waste and benefit from the by-products!

I hope someone with the power to help this project get off the ground sees this and wants to help.

Great video, showing the need for alternative ways of dealing with the nation's organic waste, and a plan for a large facility which can handle it in a way that's good for the community and the planet. As a person who travelled 40 miles to get a bucket of "magic soil" to use on my houseplants, I can testify to it's rich, organic, odor-free and re-vitalizing quality. It made all my plants flourish! Best of luck, John, on this contest!

Congratulations on this award! As a fellow human who eats lots of vegetables and fruits, I can't wait to really taste tomatoes and carrots again. It seems this miraculous cycle of converting waste to gold is divinely inspired from Mother Earth herself! And on behalf of mother earth, thank you.
